Canoe Trail
Mauston
Area
The Lemonweir River flows south
easterly through Juneau County and
becomes even more winding as it
continues from Mauston
to its confluence with
the Wisconsin River. The river banks
remain heavily wooded all
along the route.
The 15-mile trip to the mouth from Mauston
requires at least 7
hours.
Below the
dam at
Mauston the current is
quite fast, but quickly slows. One Mile Creek,
which
enters the river on the right bank about 1
mile downstream, is a brown trout
stream. A short
distance further downstream is the Interstate 9094
bridge.
The Lemonweir Millpond was formed by an old
mill dam
built in 1852 for the first flouring mill in
Juneau County. The town of Lemonweir
surrounding the millpond was a platted village
designed with hopes of
overtaking Mauston.
However, the placement of the railroad line
through
Mauston in 1857 put an end to that
dream. The grist mill closed in the
1930's and the
power plant maintained there by Wisconsin Power
and Light
Co. closed in 1950. A stone quarry at
this site provided stone for many of
the stone
buildings in Mauston. This dam has been removed
and there
are many sandbars for your enjoyment.
Sevenmile Creek joins the
Lemonweir 1 1 /4 miles downstream In the
next 3/4 mile the Lemonweir twists and
turns
to all points of the compass. From here until
its
mouth, the river is very slow with many sloughs
and
backwaters! The Two Rivers County Boat
Landing is a few miles downstream on the right
bank
near the confluence of the Lemonweir and
Wisconsin Rivers.
