Town of Lyndon Boat Launch

Juneau County: The boat launching facility in the Town of Lyndon is located at the end of River Bay Road off of Hwy. N, giving access to the Wisconsin River. In May of 1967, the road and boat launch at River Bay Inc. owned by Donald and Joan Donnelly was deeded to the Town of Lyndon for the purpose of public use.

At an Annual Town Meeting that was held April 11, 2000 discussion took place of repair needed to the boat launch at River Bay Road. A Boat Launch Committee was soon formed to look into and advise the town board of options to repair the launch. The town hired an engineer and the town was able to receive grants through the Department of Natural Resources Wisconsin Waterways Commission /Recreational Boating Facilities Program and Sport Fish Restoration Program. The grants were approved and construction started November 2005.

On July 13, 2006, the Town of Lyndon held a ceremony to commemorate the opening of the new boat launching facility. The facility is a gem to the community and without the time, hard work, and effort of many, the new boat launch facility for the Town of Lyndon would not exist.

Petenwell Rock

Located on the west banks of the Wisconsin River. Largest scenic rock formation in northern Juneau County. Legend tells that once a white man, by the name of Peter Wells, strayed to this Indian village and was so friendly that he was invited to live there and to smoke the Pipe of Peace with the Indians. It was here he met the Chief's daughter, Clinging Vine, with whom he fell in love. Clinging Vine had been promised to another and rather than give up Peter Wells, the two leaped to the river below. It is said the Indian gods returned the spirit of Clinging Vine to the rock where she stands today in memory of her faithfulness to her lover, Peter Wells. The rock was named for the brave white man, who with his Indian sweetheart, lost his life at that place. The rock is also a nesting spot for the Bald Eagle.

Castle Rock & Petenwell Lakes

The construction of the dams creating the lakes was started in 1947 and completed in 1950. They are the 2nd and 4th largest inland bodies of water in Wisconsin. The Castle Rock Dam and the Petenwell Dam are unique, because they are built on the sand and were the first such projects undertaken in the United States. The concrete dams are classified as "floating-type construction" with imbedded cutoff walls that penetrate deep into the glacial sands, permanently anchoring them.

The Wisconsin River

The Wisconsin River is the hardest working river in the nation. From its headwaters on the Wisconsin-Michigan border in Lac Vieux Desert, it falls more than 1,000 feet on its 500-mile journey through the state, before emptying into the Mississippi River at Prairie du Chien.

The Wisconsin, long notorious for devasting floods, is now partially controlled by 21 reservoirs (flowages) on the river.
